Depression & Loneliness

It stands to reason using social media makes people feel more connected and socially involved, except this study says it doesn't. This study was done to gather information regarding young people. Even if you’re not in your early twenties, reading this article can be helpful because, it’s been my observation as a therapist that, it applies to people of all ages. If you limit the time you spend on social media, you’ll have more time to complete projects around the house, make art, write poetry, train for a marathon, participate in a live social event in your community or something else that appeals to you. I'm not suggesting people give up using social media. It’s here to stay. However, deciding how much time is enough time for you and then sticking to your limits, after an initial withdrawal period, can feel refreshing and liberating. Read more at Science Daily here:

What Happens in a Panic or Anxiety Attack and What You Can Do About It

A panic attack is sudden; you aren’t aware of something that you could attribute to making you feel anxious. It comes out of nowhere, which is why many people believe they are having a heart attack. Hospital emergency rooms see people all of the time who are having panic attacks, not heart attacks because the symptoms seem that severe. If you don’t know what’s happening to you, it’s easy to think of a heart attack. And if you ever believe you have a heart attack, you do need to go to the nearest emergency room or your doctor’s office so something physical can be ruled out. Once you recognize the symptoms, it will be much easier for you to know panic attack or heart attack? The advice above goes for people having an anxiety attack too. Unless they are familiar with their anxiety and know it’s very uncomfortable but not a heart attack they won’t do the exercises I list below. The symptoms are very similar between a panic attack and an anxiety attack. However, with an anxiety attack, there’s usually a stressor involved. It could be that you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before, or you feel anxious about...

Step-Families and Triangulation in General

In Family Systems Theory, triangulation is when any two people form a stronger bond with each other against a third person. There are so many family combinations of mom/mom or mom/dad or dad/dad or grandma/dad and so on that I couldn’t possibly address all of them. When two nouns are needed, I’m going to use mom and dad. When just one noun is required, I’ll say the person, but if it’s two, I’ll use mom, dad, and child/ren. You can apply your own labels suitable for your family system once you see the pattern. Here is a list of some of the possibilities: Child and mom form a stronger alliance than mom’s alliance with dad, which drives dad away. One spouse, after the divorce, deliberately communicates messages to the child that indicate the other parent is inferior or the first parent is so much better, loves the child more, etc. A child cultivates a relationship with the biological parent and shuns the stepparent. A stepparent shuns the child and cultivates her relationship with her new partner. Grandma and child against grandma’s child, the parent. This example covers much of what triangulation is all about. It is a family system where...

About You Part Two, final

Please read yesterday's post first and then this second half:     you so you got punished for getting bad grades, and more but you get the drift, you were taught to hate yourself because, after all, would any of the loving people in their lives do anything to deliberately hurt them unless they were disgusting and not deserving of love. You, through no fault of your own, became a self-hater and self-haters project the self-hate out onto other people and then believe that others find you disgusting so you can find them disgusting back and them’s fighting words. If we could create a sea of mothers who, in the same decade, gave birth to children that they then protected and loved and nurtured, we could turn the world around. Those that are loved learn to love themselves and those that love themselves are able to love others.
